This year marks a major milestone in our story – 75 years since British Wool was founded. That’s three-quarters of a century supporting sheep farmers, championing wool and celebrating one of Britain’s most remarkable natural fibres.
Established in 1950, British Wool was formed to give sheep farmers a fair and collective way to sell their wool. Back then, the aim was simple: to ensure producers were paid fairly for their fleeces. Today, 75 years on, that principle still stands. We represent over 30,000 sheep farmers across the UK. Working together to add value to British wool and promote its unique story.
From windswept hill farms in Scotland to lush lowlands in Devon, British wool is as diverse as the landscape it comes from – and the farmers behind it are the heartbeat of everything we do.
While the world has changed dramatically over the past 75 years, one thing at British Wool has remained almost exactly the same – our grading process. Since day one, every fleece that passes through our depots has been graded by hand by skilled experts. There are no shortcuts, no machines – just a trained eye, practiced hands and generations of knowledge.
Grading is essential to ensure farmers get a fair price and that the right wool reaches the right end use. Each fleece is assessed on its length, micron (fineness), colour, strength and cleanliness, then categorised into one of more than 120 different grades. It’s meticulous work – and it matters.
Our graders undergo a rigorous three-year training programme, learning everything from grade identification and wool characteristics to how to handle fleeces efficiently and accurately. It’s a skill that takes time, commitment and pride – and we’re proud to say it’s still done the traditional way.
This blend of time-honoured practice and specialist knowledge is part of what makes British Wool unique. It ensures transparency, quality and traceability from farm to finished product – just as it has done for 75 years.
Wool has shaped Britain for centuries – it built towns, clothed generations and funded institutions. Yet in today’s fast-paced world, we often overlook just how extraordinary this fibre truly is. Naturally renewable, biodegradable, breathable and incredibly durable, wool continues to offer solutions for a more sustainable future – and it grows back every year.
In our 75-year journey, British wool has found its place in carpets, mattresses, insulation, clothing, packaging and beyond. We continue to work with forward-thinking brands, makers and craftspeople to explore new uses for this remarkable material.
At a time when the world is reckoning with the environmental toll of synthetic, fast fashion, wool has never been more important. Unlike oil-based fibres, British wool is kind to the planet and to people – with no microplastic shedding, no landfill burden, and countless natural benefits.
It’s breathable, flame-resistant, moisture-wicking, temperature-regulating – making it perfect for everything from home insulation to high-performance outdoor wear. And every purchase supports our local farming communities, preserves native sheep breeds, and reduces air miles.
Every fleece tells a story. When you choose British wool, you’re supporting a system rooted in care, quality and circularity.
As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we honour every farmer, fleece and moment that has brought us to this point. And we look forward – investing in farmer training, championing innovation and raising awareness of wool’s essential role in a more sustainable world.
This milestone isn’t just about looking back – it’s about continuing the journey.
Thank you for being part of it. Here’s to the next 75 years.
