Wool, a timeless and sustainable fibre with a rich history, has always held a special place in the hearts of crafters, knitters, and fibre enthusiasts. Its natural warmth, versatility, and eco-friendly properties make it an ideal choice for creating cosy garments and beautiful accessories. In this world of yarns, there’s a new brand making waves.

Baa Ram Ewe

Baa Ram Ewe has recently joined the British Wool flock. Their mission is simple: to share the beauty of breed-specific yarns highlighting the unique characteristics of wool from different sheep breeds.

Collaborating with British farmers, spinners, and dyers. All working in harmony to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare and minimal environmental impact.

Based in the historic wool processing area nestled in the Pennine hills of northern England. The Baa Ram Ewe team brings a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to manufacturing and knitting with British wool yarns.

Wool

One of the unique aspects of Baa Ram Ewe’s yarn is their commitment to showcasing the wide variety of British sheep breeds. Each fleece differs from breed to breed, with varying fibre length, softness, and strength, creating a broad spectrum of textures for knitting enthusiasts to explore.

With over 60 pure breeds in the UK categorised into seven main groups. Including fine, medium, cross, lustre, hill, mountain, and naturally coloured, there’s a British sheep breed perfectly suited to your project.

One hundred percent of their wool comes from non-mulesed sheep, ensuring the well-being of the animals that provide us with this beautiful fibre. All the British wool (Bluefaced Leicester and Masham) is sourced through our wool auctions that support 35,000 sheep farmers across the UK.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the British sheep breeds they work with and the other wool fibres from across the world:

Bluefaced Leicester (Lustre): Known for its fine, long-staple wool, the Bluefaced Leicester combines softness with strength, creating exquisite, lustrous yarn. This breed’s heritage hails from the Tyne & Wear Valleys and the hills of east Cumbria.

Masham (Cross): Produced by crossing various breeds, including the Teeswater and Wensleydale, the Masham sheep offers a soft, demi-lustre fleece.

Alpaca: While not a sheep, alpaca fibres provide a soft and silky yarn with a natural light-reflecting lustre. Baa Ram Ewe sources this luxurious fibre from the Andean Mountains of Peru.

Merino: Merino sheep are world-famous for their superfine wool. The short and fine fibres of the Merino breed result in a luxurious and soft texture, and Baa Ram Ewe sources it from Spain.
