Celebrating Emerging Talent

For nearly a century, the Bradford Textile Society Design Competition has stood as a vital platform for nurturing the next generation of textile designers. Founded in 1925, the competition is the longest-running of its kind in the UK, spotlighting innovation, craftsmanship, and creativity from budding talent across the country.

In recent years, we have proudly sponsored key awards in collaboration with industry partners, supporting young designers and championing the use of natural, sustainable fibres.

Bradford Textiles Society

Founded in 1893, the Bradford Textile Society is the oldest textile society in Britain and has long played a pivotal role in supporting the UK’s textile industry. Based in the heart of Yorkshire’s historic wool region, the Society was established to encourage innovation, education, and collaboration within the textile community. Over the years, it has brought together industry professionals, academics, and students through lectures, exhibitions, and events.

2024: Contemporary Heritage and Global Inspiration

The 2024 competition saw over 600 entries from emerging designers, each bringing a fresh perspective to traditional textiles. The two categories focused on British wool included.

The British Wool x Glencroft Ltd Award: This category challenges students to reimagine traditional country knitwear with a modern lens, using 100% British wool. Last year’s winner, Grace Lawrence from Lincolnshire, captured the judges’ attention with a design inspired by hiking and outdoor life. Her contemporary knitwear piece fused style and function, demonstrating wool’s potential in sustainable outerwear. “Knitting with British wool makes me feel part of our rich cultural heritage,” she said, reflecting on wool’s deep-rooted connection to the British landscape.

The British Wool x Alternative Flooring Award: This award calls for carpet, rug or runner designs using British wool. Jemima Godfrey, a student from the University of Huddersfield, impressed with a globally inspired piece influenced by cultural patterns and architecture. Her creative approach to design structure gave a fresh perspective to floor coverings, proving wool’s versatility beyond apparel. Jemima said: “Using British wool has been a fantastic experience – its natural fibres are so adaptable.”

These two awards not only encourage design excellence but also underline the timeless appeal and technical performance of British wool. “It’s great to see what these talented designers can do with the fibre,” said British Wool’s Marketing Director, Graham Clark. “Wool is a timeless material – it’s time to stop thinking about it in the context of your granny’s jumper!”

Inspiring Sustainable Design for the Future

The winning designs from 2023 and 2024 not only celebrate creativity but also align with a growing movement among young designers who prioritise sustainability. British wool is naturally biodegradable, renewable, and highly durable – characteristics that are increasingly relevant in the face of fast fashion and synthetic-heavy design practices.

By sponsoring these student awards, we are proud to help inspire the next generation to explore the possibilities of working with wool and textiles. The competition not only highlights the creativity and innovation of young designers but also encourages a deeper appreciation for natural, sustainable fibres like British wool. We look forward to seeing this year’s entries and selecting the winners of the Glencroft Knitwear Garment Design and the Alternative Flooring Rug or Carpet Design – two categories that continue to showcase the exciting future of wool in both fashion and interiors.
