Weaving Heritage: Melin Tregwynt’s New Welsh Wool Collection

Melin Tregwynt, a renowned Welsh woollen mill with over a century of heritage, is proud to unveil its limited-edition Welsh Wool Collection. This collection is the culmination of a three-year collaboration under the Gwnaed  Gwlan/Made with Wool project, aiming to rejuvenate the Welsh wool industry by reestablishing a commercial supply chain for locally grown wool.

Sophia Watt, Head of Textiles Design & Sustainability Coordinator at Melin Tregwynt, said:

The Welsh woollen industry and weaving in Wales is the root of our rural business and so we are honoured to have been a part of this project. Creating a route to commercially source Welsh-grown wool helps to revitalise this industry and protect the rural economy. As an EOT, being able to support and sustain rural skills, communities, and jobs through this supply chain is important for our business.”

The collection features seven fabrics, each woven from 100% Welsh wool, showcasing three traditional Melin Tregwynt designs. The colour palettes draw inspiration from Wales’ historic landscapes, with evocative names such as:

  • Dylan: Derived from the Welsh for ‘great tide’, also the name of a sea-god from the Mabinogion.
  • Melyn Mair: Welsh for ‘marigold’, symbolizing cheerful blooms with age-old beneficial uses.
  • Llwyd: Welsh for ‘grey’, referencing Brenin Llwyd – the Grey King of Welsh folklore, known to haunt the mists of Welsh mountain tops.
  • Glyn: Welsh for ‘valley’, a name deeply rooted in Welsh history, reflecting a profound connection to the land.

This initiative not only celebrates the rich tapestry of Welsh culture but also supports local farmers by ensuring they receive a fair premium for their wool. The project exemplifies a commitment to sustainability and the preservation of traditional crafts.
