The Welsh Yarn Project, a community-driven initiative designed to showcase the best of Welsh wool. This project paved the way for the creation of the new Welsh Wool Shepherd’s Crook logo. This emblem, now set to be a mark of authenticity for 100% Welsh wool products. But also represents the hard work of the project group (Menter Môn, Melin Tregwynt, Cambrian Wool and ourselves) to enable the collaborative work between farmers, wool depots, brands, and manufacturers across Wales.
The roots of the Welsh Yarn Project comes from the desire to support local wool farmers and highlight the distinct quality and heritage of Welsh wool and the industry. Historically, Welsh wool has been prized for its durability and character, yet in recent years, global competition and synthetic alternatives have posed challenges to the industry. The Welsh Yarn Project aimed to address these challenges by fostering collaboration between various stakeholders. Enabling the many Weaving Mills across Wales to start using the wool that is local to them. As many us imported wool from across the world including New Zealand.
At the heart of this project was the ambition to tell the story of Welsh wool – from farm to finished product. By bringing together local farmers, wool depots, and manufacturers, the initiative not only produced beautiful, traceable yarns but also strengthened rural economies and upheld Welsh cultural traditions.
Elen Parry, Project Manager at Made with Wool, explained:
“The Welsh Yarn Project has been a labour of love for everyone involved. From the farmers who work tirelessly to produce high-quality wool, to the grading depots and manufacturers who turn that wool into something truly special, this project represents what can be achieved when a community comes together.”
As the project grew, it became clear that there was a need for a symbol to represent the uniqueness and authenticity of Welsh wool. Enter the new Welsh Wool Shepherd’s Crook logo. An emblem inspired by the traditional crook used by shepherds across Wales for centuries. The logo not only speaks to the heritage of Welsh sheep farming but also serves as a guarantee of quality and traceability for consumers.
The design of the Shepherd’s Crook logo reflects the project’s core values of sustainability and craftsmanship. It tells a story of tradition meeting innovation, as the wool industry adapts to modern demands while preserving its rich history. Products that carry this logo ensure that consumers are buying genuine Welsh wool, supporting local farmers, and contributing to the revival of an age-old industry.
Gareth Jones, Head of Member Engagement at British Wool, shared his enthusiasm for the new logo:
“The Welsh Wool Shepherd’s Crook logo is a proud symbol for both manufacturers and consumers. It embodies everything the Welsh Yarn Project stands for – authenticity, quality, and community. With this mark, we can offer transparency and reassurance to buyers, while celebrating the exceptional work of our local wool farmers.”
The Welsh Yarn Project has proven that community collaboration can spark change. Not only within local economies but also in creating a strong identity for Welsh wool on a global scale. The new Welsh Shepherd’s Crook logo is now the face of that identity, bringing Welsh wool into the spotlight as a premium, sustainable, and locally sourced material.
Looking ahead, the Welsh Yarn Project continues to grow, with plans to expand production and involve more local businesses in using the yarn. The Welsh Shepherd’s Crook logo will play a crucial role in building consumer trust and encouraging businesses to proudly use Welsh wool in their products, creating a positive ripple effect across the industry.
As more consumers become aware of the environmental and economic benefits of buying local. The Welsh Yarn Project and its new logo offer a shining example of how tradition, sustainability, and innovation can work hand in hand to build a brighter future for Welsh wool.
