As a family, we rear pedigree Hebridean sheep on our croft at Sunhill on the island of Berneray and our whole farm plan ensures the best in animal husbandry and careful consideration for our island biodiversity and ecology.
After shearing, we check and clean every Hebridean fleece gathered from our own and neighbouring island flocks. Our cheviot fleece is sourced from crofts in the Outer Hebrides and graded by British Wool.
The yarn is spun in Yorkshire making use of hundreds of years of wool production knowledge. Our natural blended yarns combine both Hebridean and Cheviot fleece this is then over-dyed to achieve a range of Hebridean coloured yarns reflecting the subtle tones and shades of our surrounding sea, shores and moorland.
Our range of knitting patterns are designed both in-house by founder Meg Rodger and in collaboration with leading international knitwear designers. They are unique to Birlinn Yarn and draw their creative inspiration from the Norse and Hebridean heritage of the islands, combined with a contemporary twist.
Our yarn is unique, small batch and authentically Hebridean. It supports the crofting culture of the islands and associated knowledge of small-scale agriculture, land, sea and wildlife, that have been passed down through many generations.
Our island environment, culture, community and simple way of life are important to us as a family. Values that we hope we can share with your through our products.
