Sleep Your Way to Happiness

Research has found that around 2 million people are affected by seasonal Affective disorder (SAD) and accompanied with the January blues. This sees Brits sleeping for two hours longer per night in the winter months compared to summer.

SAD symptoms include feeling lethargic (lacking in energy), feeling sleepy during the day. Sleeping for longer than normal and finding it hard to get up in the morning. With many people struggling to get good quality sleep.

Sleeping Habits

A survey by British Wool shows that Brits sleeping habits go beyond SAD – 71% rely simply on sleeping on their side of the bed to get a good night sleep, even at other people’s houses or in hotel rooms. With 58% stating if they sleep badly if they’re on the ‘wrong’ side.

However, the research also found that most brits (39%) opt to sleep on a memory foam mattress but a third (33%) don’t know what their bedding is made of. Only 37% said their bedding was made from natural materials (wool, down or feathers), which is known to promote a better night’s sleep.

Harry Thompson, from Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Co., said:

“It’s a well-known fact that natural fibres, particularly wool, regulates body temperature, keeping us warm and cosy in winter and cooler in summer. It’s likely that, whilst we’re creatures of habit and there are many factors into why we as a nation struggle to sleep, temperature regulation plays a large part and is one of the easiest to control.

In terms of SAD, experts advise that light therapy, exercise, and energy-boosting foods can also reduce symptoms – it’s about looking after yourself during the winter months.”
