Nestled in the rolling hills of Southowram, just a few miles from the historic textile stronghold of Dean Clough, Avena Carpets is quietly continuing a story that began over 50 years ago. A story of heritage, craftsmanship, and the enduring power of British wool.
The origins of Avena Carpets date back to 1974, when the closure of Carpets International (formerly Crossley Carpets) marked the end of an era for narrow loom carpet manufacturing. But for seven of the skilled staff made redundant that year, it was just the beginning. United by their passion and expertise, they purchased the original looms and archive designs, founding Avena Carpets to continue the proud weaving tradition.
Today, the company remains true to its roots. Under the ownership of Richard, Avena Carpets still operates those very same looms. A rare testament to both craftsmanship and care. Many of the archive designs are still in use today, especially in historic restorations, but the company has also expanded to create more contemporary styles. The result? A fusion of old and new that sets Avena apart.
At the heart of Avena Carpets lie two unwavering values: preserving the authenticity of original Brussels Wilton weaves and safeguarding the traditional skills that make such carpets possible. These values not only define their product but shape the way the business is run, from design to manufacture.
Younger generations are trained in the precise techniques needed to prepare materials, develop patterns, and operate the historic looms. It’s not just a job; it’s a continuation of a lineage.
For Avena, choosing British wool isn’t just a practical decision, it’s a philosophical one. Using this natural, resilient fibre honours the original weaves their looms were designed for, supports British farming, and reinforces their commitment to quality.
British wool is uniquely suited to carpet making. Its durability, texture, and environmental advantages make it the obvious choice. Staying true to British materials helps Avena celebrate and support a full circle of local production, from fleece to finished floor.
Sustainability at Avena isn’t a recent trend, it’s always been a part of the process. Their carpets are made from natural materials such as British wool, cotton, and jute, making them over 98% biodegradable. They also prioritise local sourcing to reduce their carbon footprint and support nearby businesses.
Waste is minimal with offcuts and surplus yarns are repurposed locally into underlay, felt, and even hanging basket liners. This circular approach is also part of the company’s tradition. And they’re always looking to see if there are other ways of utilising or adding value to every part of their operation. It seems what was once known as Yorkshire folks’ reluctance to waste and ‘being tight’ has eventually caught on and the planet will be the better for it.
For Avena, wool isn’t just better it’s incomparable. It offers flame resistance, thermal and acoustic insulation, breathability, moisture control, and natural antibacterial qualities. Wool carpets help regulate temperature, absorb airborne toxins, and create healthier indoor environments. All without the need for harsh chemicals.
Combined with longevity and low maintenance, it’s easy to see why Avena proudly supports the “buy once, buy forever” mindset. Synthetic options simply don’t compare.
Being part of the British wool movement means everything to Avena. Based in Calderdale, surrounded by sheep and fields, the connection to wool is personal and constant. They see the value in every fleece and believe deeply in the importance of paying farmers fairly, preserving rural skills, and promoting natural, sustainable products in a world increasingly dominated by fast fashion and disposables.
“British Sheep’s Wool is such an asset to the country, and the government and all of us must play our part in ensuring we keep promoting and using this versatile product.”
Avena Carpets is more than a carpet maker, it’s a custodian of tradition, a champion for sustainability, and a proud link in the chain of British wool heritage. When you choose an Avena carpet, you’re not just investing in a floor covering. You’re supporting generations of skill, sustainability, and local pride.
