In a world where transparency and sustainability matter more than ever, Laxtons is leading the charge with Wooltrace — a fully traceable yarn collection made from British wool. We caught up with Rochelle Tracey, National Accounts Manager, at Laxtons to explore the story behind the fibre, the farms, and the future of traceable yarn.
“Wooltrace is our fully traceable yarn collection made exclusively from British wool, where we can pinpoint the exact farm each fleece came from,” explains NAME. “For us, traceability isn’t just a marketing term — it’s a core part of our values. It’s about honouring the people behind the fibre, supporting British farmers, and providing absolute transparency for our customers.”
Every step of the Wooltrace process happens under Laxtons’ watchful eye — from sourcing to spinning at their Yorkshire mill. It’s a unique model that gives brands confidence and customers a meaningful connection to their yarn.
One of the standout features of Wooltrace is its Farm Finder — a simple but powerful tool that brings the customer right to the source. “Every cone or hank of Wooltrace yarn comes with a QR code,” says Rochelle. “When scanned, it takes the customer to a dedicated webpage where they can discover the specific farm, or group of farms, their wool came from.”
With photos, farmer profiles, and information about their flocks, the Farm Finder turns every purchase into a personal story. It’s not just yarn — it’s a journey.
“It empowers farmers, adds value to the supply chain, and helps brands meet the growing demand for provenance and accountability in their materials.”
Laxtons believe traceability is more than a trend — it’s the future. “For too long, wool — especially British wool — has been undervalued in the global market,” says Rochelle. “Collections like Wooltrace demonstrate that with the right infrastructure, storytelling, and commitment, British wool can be both premium and planet-positive.”
And they’re right. As consumers and brands alike look to buy more responsibly, traceable yarns offer a tangible way to show values in action — supporting local farmers, improving transparency, and creating stronger, more sustainable supply chains.
The Wooltrace story is just beginning Laxtons have big plans.
“We’re incredibly excited about the future of Wooltrace. We are looking into expanding the range not only to include more British breeds but also looking beyond the UK to incorporate traceable fibres from international farms. The goal is to create a truly global traceable yarn collection, while maintaining the same integrity and transparency that define Wooltrace.”
They’re also developing the Farm Finder to be even more interactive. From richer storytelling content to potentially integrating audio or video from the farms themselves, we’re exploring how digital tools can strengthen the connection between maker, brand, and grower.
“Ultimately, we want Wooltrace to be the benchmark for traceability — not just in the UK, but globally,”
With Wooltrace, Laxtons is not only spinning high-quality yarn — they’re weaving a future where every thread tells a story, and every maker knows exactly where their fibre begins.
