Christine Armstrong and Susan Spencer are lifelong friends who have collaborated for over three decades. They combine their shared passion for British sheep’s wool with a talent for design and a drive to make things happen.
Both are dedicated advocates for wool. Christine pioneered Thermafleece, the first British sheep’s wool insulation company, and remains actively involved in the Campaign for Wool. Susan, a textile designer with a deep appreciation for natural materials, has long championed sustainable craftsmanship. Their combined expertise, love for the material, and commitment to British industry form the foundation of soul nature.
We sat down with Christine to find out more about soul nature.
Can you tell us a bit about the story behind soul nature? What inspired you to start your business?
Having had a lifelong connection to wool and working with coarse coloured wool from the UK. I was inspired to create soul nature – a collection of products designed to nurture relaxation and well-being.
Our cushions, pet beds, and yoga mats offer more than comfort; they provide a sanctuary for intentional rest in the midst of modern life’s demands.
soul nature reflects my belief in the power of natural materials to create spaces of calm and connection, bringing the timeless essence of wool into everyday moments of peace.
If you could describe soul nature in three words, what would they be?
Innovation, luxury, and functionality.
What are the benefits of using British wool for your yoga mats and cushions?
Our designs strike a harmonious balance between modern sophistication and traditional craftsmanship, reflecting the rich heritage and innovative spirit of British products and industry.
What role does community and collaboration play in your business?
Community and collaboration are the cornerstones of our business. By working closely with suppliers, we ensure every product tells a story of shared values and collective effort.
Collaboration allows us to innovate responsibly, while our deep ties to the community help us support the people and traditions that make our products unique. Together, we strive to create a positive impact that extends beyond our business, inspiring others to join the journey towards sustainability.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting a sustainable business today?
Don’t be in a rush. Focus on building a transparent supply chain and prioritise quality over quantity. Sustainability isn’t just a feature; it’s a philosophy that requires commitment, innovation, and constant learning.
